Choosing a wood floor involves more than selecting the timber species, colour and finish. The installation method affects how stable the floor feels, how it responds to temperature and humidity, and how well it performs over time.
Floating, glue-down and nail-down systems can all produce durable results, but each suits different flooring products, subfloors and property conditions. The correct choice depends on the board construction, moisture levels, room size, foot traffic, acoustic requirements and whether underfloor heating is installed.
Match the Method to the Flooring Product
The flooring type is the first factor to consider.
Solid wood flooring is made from a single piece of timber. It can often be sanded several times, but it also expands and contracts as environmental conditions change. It therefore requires careful acclimatisation, suitable expansion gaps and a fixing method approved for the board dimensions.
Engineered wood has a real timber surface bonded to a layered core. This construction reduces dimensional movement, making it suitable for more applications. Depending on the product, it may be floated, glued down or mechanically fixed.
Parquet consists of smaller blocks arranged in patterns such as herringbone or chevron. Accurate positioning is essential, so it is usually bonded to a carefully prepared subfloor.
Board thickness, joint design and the manufacturer’s instructions should always be checked before installation.
Assess the Subfloor Before Installation
Even high-quality flooring will perform poorly over a damp, uneven or unstable base. Subfloor preparation is therefore essential.
Timber subfloors should be checked for movement, loose boards, damage and differences in level. Repairs may be needed, while flooring-grade plywood can create a secure, consistent surface.
Concrete subfloors must be assessed for moisture and flatness. A suitable levelling compound may be required, while a damp-proof system can protect the timber where moisture conditions demand it. The surface must also be clean and free from dust, grease and old adhesive.

When Is a Floating Floor Suitable?
A floating floor is laid over an underlay rather than fixed directly to the subfloor. The boards connect through a click-lock or tongue-and-groove system and move as one surface.
This method is commonly used for compatible engineered wood flooring. It can be quicker to install than a fully bonded floor and easier to remove later. A suitable underlay may also improve acoustic performance, add comfort and provide limited protection against minor surface irregularities.
Floating installation often suits residential rooms where efficient fitting is a priority. However, expansion gaps must remain around walls, door frames, pipes and other fixed elements. Floating floors may also feel less solid underfoot and may not suit very large rooms or heavily used commercial spaces.
When Is Glue-Down Installation Preferable?
With the glue-down method, the flooring is bonded directly to the prepared subfloor using a compatible adhesive. This approach is frequently used for engineered wood and parquet because it creates a firm, stable surface.
Glue-down fitting may be appropriate when:
- parquet or patterned flooring is being installed;
- greater stability is required;
- footfall noise needs to be reduced;
- compatible underfloor heating is present;
- the room will experience substantial foot traffic.
Subfloor preparation must be precise because adhesive cannot correct significant unevenness, movement or moisture problems. The adhesive must also suit the flooring, subfloor and environmental conditions.
Although a bonded floor can be more difficult to remove, its stability and efficient heat transfer make it a strong option for residential and commercial interiors.
When Should Flooring Be Nailed Down?
Nail-down installation mechanically fixes the boards to a timber subfloor. Nails, cleats or specialist screws are usually driven through the tongue so that the fixings remain concealed.
This method is commonly used for solid hardwood and certain thicker engineered boards. It suits projects where a stable timber base is available and the flooring is approved for mechanical fixing.
Nail-down installation is not normally used directly over concrete unless a suitable timber base has first been constructed. Fixing position and spacing must be controlled carefully, as incorrect installation can damage joints, restrict natural movement or create squeaks.
Control Moisture and Allow Acclimatisation
Wood responds to changes in temperature and relative humidity. Flooring should therefore be stored and acclimatised according to the manufacturer’s instructions before installation.
The property should be enclosed and operating under normal internal conditions. Wet trades, including plastering and screeding, must be complete and sufficiently dry. Moisture readings should be taken from both the flooring and subfloor.
Expansion allowances must also be provided around room perimeters and fixed points. Installing timber in unsuitable conditions can lead to shrinkage, cupping, movement or gaps.
Consider Underfloor Heating Early
Not every wooden floor is suitable for underfloor heating. Engineered wood is often preferred because its layered construction offers greater dimensional stability than solid timber.
A fully bonded installation can support efficient heat transfer by reducing air space between the flooring and subfloor. However, the boards, adhesive and heating system must all be compatible.
The heating should be commissioned gradually, and the maximum floor-surface temperature specified by the manufacturer must not be exceeded. Excessive heat can dry the timber and cause unwanted movement.
Choose for Long-Term Performance
The best installation method is determined by the complete project rather than the flooring alone. Subfloor construction, moisture, room dimensions, foot traffic, acoustics and underfloor heating must all be considered.
As a general guide:
- floating installation suits many engineered floors where speed and underlay performance are priorities;
- glue-down fitting works well for parquet, heated floors and projects requiring a firm surface;
- nail-down installation provides a traditional fixing over a secure timber base.
These are useful starting points rather than universal rules. A professional survey and the flooring manufacturer’s guidance should determine the final specification.
When the flooring, subfloor and installation method are assessed together, the finished result is more likely to remain stable, attractive and durable.
